The Veil

In the first chapter of the novel, Marjane walks us through the situation and the things that were happening at the time in the country where she lived, Iran. She tells us about how she was forced to wear are veil. Even though her and her parents were a religious, they stayed very modern and avant-garde. You can see the facial expressions in the book and in the last frame of the first page you see the school kids. They are all confused and heatened by the obligatory veil. They didn't like it. And Marjane tells us it was because they did not understand why they had to wear it. Boys and girls were being put in seperate schools. This, they did not understand either. It was a very confusing and unclear time for them. Marjane was only 10 years old. 

The Dowry

Neda died and Marjane becomes more and more rebellious. She hit the principal and got expelled.She gets in trouble at her new school as well. Her parents were frightened and decided to send Marji away to Vienna, Austria.
